Vintage Report

2023 was a good year for Burgundy, with wines showing ripe fruit and freshness. Yields were naturally good, and targeted green harvesting ensured concentration and balance.

Michel Gros Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2023

Michel Gros Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2023 is the most accessible red Burgundy from this estate, but one with a clear Vosne signature. Domaine Michel Gros">Domaine Michel Gros is a family estate in Vosne-Romanée that has been producing refined Pinot Noir with great precision in the vineyard and cellar since 1830, now under the guidance of his son, Pierre. Why is Michel Gros Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2023 such an interesting introduction to this winery? Because you can taste the elegant style of the Côte de Nuits in a wine that is immediately enjoyable yet has the depth to age for several years.

Vineyards and region

The grapes come from France, from Burgundy, in the Bourgogne Côte d'Or appellation, with plots in and around Vosne-Romanée. These vineyards are located on the slopes of the Côte de Nuits, where chalky soils and a cool continental climate combine to produce ripe yet refined Pinot Noir with crisp acidity. Bourgogne Côte d'Or is a relatively new appellation that specifically highlights the best regional plots along the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, and Michel Gros uses plots here that strongly rely on the finesse of Vosne. Yields were naturally good in 2023, but the estate maintained the concentration and balance of the grapes through targeted green harvesting (removing extra bunches in the summer).

Vinification and maturation

For Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2023, the grapes are harvested by plot and vinified separately, preserving the character of each vineyard. Harvesting is done manually, in keeping with Domaine Michel Gros's meticulous approach from vine to bottle. In the cellar, classic Burgundy vinification follows, with Pinot Noir fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, focused on preserving fruit, tension, and finesse rather than pure power. The 2023 vintage produced medium-bodied wines with lively acidity, and this cuvée deliberately maintains an elegant red fruit character, a supple texture, and sufficient backbone to allow the wine to develop beautifully in the first years after bottling.

Grape composition

Pinot Noir – plots in and around Vosne-Romanée within Bourgogne Côte d'Or
The wine is 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from regional plots that lean heavily on the Vosne-Romanée style. This results in a Bourgogne Côte d'Or with a pronounced red fruit profile, fine tannins, and a recognizable Côte de Nuits signature, supported by an alcohol content of around 13%.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

The Michel Gros Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2023 reveals itself as a bright ruby red. The nose is aromatic and refined, with notes of red and dark berries, a hint of cherry liqueur, and a touch of fresh earth. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with juicy red fruit, a supple, rounded attack, and fine tannins that are still youthful yet complement the crisp acidity. The finish is quite long for this level, with a slightly dusty grip and a subtle spicy edge, making it a wine that is already easy to drink and can gain complexity with a few years of bottle aging. Serve this Bourgogne at around 14–16°C with poultry such as duck breast or oven-baked chicken, veal, charcuterie, and fine meats, or with dishes featuring roasted vegetables and mushrooms; its elegant style also comes into its own with soft to semi-hard cheeses.
