The fruit bursts from the glass in this lightly sparkling Piemonte Brachetto from the Cascina Ghercina winery. Quality is paramount with this wine, and we certainly taste the difference.

Origin of the Brachetto grape

Brachetto is a native aromatic variety of Piedmont. Cultivation is primarily concentrated on the hills surrounding Acqui Terme. In the 1990s, the grape only gained attention and recognition from winemakers and consumers as a sweet red wine. Its signature aroma is the rosé. However, the grape is also excellent for sparkling wines produced using the Charmat method. The origins of this variety are unclear. Some documents from the early 1700s mention Brachetto and Moscato wines as wines consumed by the Savoy family. In 1800, Brachetto was mentioned in an official document issued by the Royal Agricultural Society of Turin, which listed it among the varieties grown on the Canavese hills, around Ivrea, in Piedmont, as well as in the Aosta Valley. By the late 1800s, there were two types of Brachetto: the Piedmontese type, which was aromatic, and the so-called Nizzardo, with a simple flavor. At the beginning of the 1900s, techniques for producing sparkling wines arrived in the Asti region. Brachetto achieved great success as a base for sparkling wines, thanks to its aroma and floral notes.

The vinification and flavors of Piemonte Brachetto

The grapes are carefully harvested and then gently pressed. This is followed by 24-hour cold maceration with a light pressing at two degrees Celsius. Fermentation takes place for eight days in pressurized stainless steel vats, followed by a month of aging on the lees. Filtering and bottling take place at a low temperature. The aroma reveals roses, raspberries, cherries, and even a hint of honeysuckle. Yes, indeed, delicious, and this Cascina Ghercina Piemonte Brachetto truly shines when enjoyed chilled. Sweet and refreshingly fresh on the palate, with a pleasant mousse, delicious cherries and raspberries, lively acidity, and a pleasant tingle on the finish, all light-hearted thanks to its 7% alcohol content.
