| Land | Frankrijk. Alsace is een zelfstandig Frans wijngebied en is niet hetzelfde als de bestuurlijke regio Grand Est. |
| Officiële afbakening | Het AOC-cahier des charges van 2024 omvat 119 gemeenten in Bas-Rhin en Haut-Rhin. |
| Oppervlakte | In Bas-Rhin en Haut-Rhin lag 15.417 hectare in productie voor AOP-wijn; brondefinitie: definitieve Franse jaarlijkse landbouwstatistiek over 2024. |
| Wijnproductie | In 2024 werd 828.000 hectoliter AOC-wijn geproduceerd; 89% van dit volume was witte wijn. De noemer is alle AOC-wijn uit Alsace. |

Maps and location
What does Alsace comprise as a wine region?
Alsace is an elongated French wine region on the eastern side of the Vosges mountains. The official 2024 AOC dossier covers 119 municipalities in the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments and describes a 120-kilometer strip, typically less than 1 kilometer wide, running from the northern enclave around Cleebourg through Marlenheim to Thann. The wine region therefore does not coincide with the much larger administrative region of Grand Est.[1]
How large is viticulture in Alsace?
According to the final agricultural statistics for 2024, 15,417 hectares in the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin were in production for AOP wine. In the same year, 828,000 hectoliters of AOC wine were produced; 89% of that volume was white wine. In addition, 121 million bottles were commercialized across all Alsace AOCs. The latter is a sales figure and not a converted production volume.[2]
The 2020 agricultural census counted 3,323 farms with vines: 1,549 in Bas-Rhin and 1,774 in Haut-Rhin. This definition includes all agricultural holdings with vines and is therefore not the same as a count of solely winemakers or bottling producers.[3]
Alsace is known for aromatic white wines that are often made dry, sparkling Crémant d’Alsace, and a growing role for Pinot Noir.[4] Browse the existing collection of wines from Alsace or place the wine region within France.
Why is the climate of Alsace so dry?
Rain shadow of the Vosges
The official 2024 AOC dossier classifies the climate as semi-continental. The Vosges mountains shield the wine region from humid ocean air, resulting in approximately 500 to 650 millimeters of precipitation annually in the vineyards. Warm days, cool nights, and a long growing season help the grapes build aroma and ripeness gradually.[5]
Slopes, sun exposure, and soils
According to the same official dossier, the majority of the plantings are located between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. The soils form a mosaic of schist, granite, sandstone, limestone, marl, and alluvial sand and gravel, among others. As a result, Alsace does not have one fixed flavor profile; grape, origin, and winemaking method remain decisive.[6]
Which appellations belong to Alsace?
AOC Alsace
AOC Alsace, recognized in 1962, forms the broad regional appellation. A grape variety name is often prominently displayed on the label; when mentioned, the wine must be made entirely from that grape according to the appellation rules. Some labels also state a municipality or an officially designated vineyard location, known as a lieu-dit in French.[8]
AOC Crémant d’Alsace
Crémant d’Alsace is sparkling wine that undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle. The appellation was recognized in 1976. Pinot Blanc is important, but Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir can also play a role within the regulations. Rosé is made exclusively from Pinot Noir.[9]
51 Alsace Grands Crus
The 51 Alsace Grands Crus are separately delineated appellations with their own location and production conditions. For most grands crus, Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer are the permitted main grape varieties; some grands crus have specific exceptions.[10] Together with AOC Alsace and AOC Crémant d’Alsace, the total comes to 53 appellations.[11]
Which grapes define Alsace?
A dated CIVA overview from 2017 divides the plantings as follows: Riesling 21.9%, Pinot Blanc 21.2%, Gewurztraminer 19.4%, Pinot Gris 15.4%, Pinot Noir 9.9%, Sylvaner 7.5%, and Muscat 2.3%. These are rounded source percentages from that reference year; they do not represent an up-to-date distribution.[12]
For still AOC Alsace, the 2024 cahier des charges also lists Auxerrois, white and pink Chasselas, white and pink Muscat à Petits Grains, Muscat Ottonel, and, exclusively within Klevener de Heiligenstein, Savagnin Rose.[13] Chardonnay is permitted for Crémant d’Alsace, but not for still AOC Alsace.[14]

How do you read an Alsace label?
Start with the appellation: AOC Alsace, AOC Crémant d’Alsace, or the name of an Alsace Grand Cru. Then look at the grape variety, vintage, and any geographic indication. The French terms “Vendanges Tardives” (late harvest) and “Sélection de Grains Nobles” (selection of noble-rotted grapes) are legally defined designations. They are not administrative sub-regions, and they do not automatically mean that every bottle has the same level of sweetness. Therefore, also check the winemaker's information and any sweetness indicators.[15]
Which Alsace wine suits which moment?
Choose Riesling for fresh, crisp dishes or when acidity is central. Pinot Gris often pairs well with richer dishes, while Gewurztraminer works well with distinct spices and aromatic preparations. Crémant d’Alsace is a logical sparkling choice as an aperitif or for a festive moment. Use this as a guideline, not an absolute rule: the winemaker, vineyard, vintage, and winemaking method change the final style.
