The 2023 vintage in the Languedoc has been rated excellent with a score of 94 points. The wines from this year show great quality and a balanced character.

The Croix gentlemen were considered crazy when they announced they were making a wine from Viognier. A difficult grape to cultivate, it requires a great deal of attention and only thrives in the best locations. Viognier produces great wines in France, such as Condrieu, a bottle starting at a hefty forty euros. Yet, the Croix gentlemen of the eponymous Croix d'Or winery were convinced of their vineyard in the Pays d'Oc. A few years ago, they planted Viognier in a unique, slightly elevated location, and it proved a success, as this white wine is so complete. With a subsoil rich in chalk and marl, the grapes grow superbly. The Mediterranean climate ensures the right ripeness and strong skins, allowing this white wine to be harvested early.

The old Viognier vineyard of Croix d'Or

The vineyard is now mature and producing full, firm bunches. These are harvested at ideal ripeness, in the middle of the night while the Viognier grapes are still dormant. This minimizes the risk of bruising during transport, and the grapes retain their freshness, typical of the Croix d'Or style. Upon arrival in small crates, all the grapes are placed on sorting tables and rigorously inspected. Only the finest juice makes it into the final bottle. This allows us to conclude that the purity of this white wine is truly exceptional.

The smell and taste of the Croix d'Or Viognier

We already knew Croix d'Or could make fantastic wines, but this full-bodied Viognier truly takes the cake. This is beautifully and stylishly crafted from the notoriously difficult-to-grow Viognier grape. The Croix d'Or Viognier has a beautiful golden yellow color and offers aromas of exotic fruit and floral notes (lavender, acacia). The palate is powerful, rich, and balanced at the same time. The Croix d'Or Viognier has a rich texture, yet is fresh and has a lovely finish with a hint of honey.
