Our Review
A thick and full-bodied red wine is the first thing we wrote down when we drank this red Prunotto Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba. A wine with a very long history, as the first wines from Prunotto were already made in 1905. Initially under the leadership of the cooperative named Cantina Sociale "Ai Vini delle Langhe". A number of winemakers then joined forces and set to work to make the most beautiful wines. Due to many negative influences, the winery soon ceased operations, but co-founder Alfredo Prunotto bought the winery a few years later. Under his leadership, which gave it the name Prunotto, the wines became a great success and are known all over the world. None other than the Antinori family was surprised by the quality, and when Alfredo Prunotto wanted to retire, the Antinori family bought the winery. And yes, there is so much knowledge available there, which further increased the quality.
The old vineyard for the Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba
Pian Romualdo was first produced in 1961 from Prunotto's vineyards in the Monforte D’Alba area. Barbera vines grown here greatly benefit from temperature fluctuations between day and night, allowing Pian Romualdo to develop a distinct freshness as well as refined aromas and excellent aging potential. When the Barbera grapes are ripe, which takes a very long time, they are harvested by hand. Each bunch is inspected, and only the best are used in this red wine. After this, it undergoes sixteen months of wood aging. And all of this results in a top wine from the Barbera D'Alba region.
Full and very powerful, this Prunotto Pian Romualdo Barbera D'Alba
We pour this red wine into a large glass and see an astonishingly beautiful red-purple-like color. It smells of black fruit with herbs and spices. But cedar, toast, and dried plums are also discernible. In the mouth, it surprises us, initially with a fresh onset of black fruit with some notes of cedar. As the wine warms slightly in the mouth, it also reveals impressions of cocoa and some earth. This beautiful red Barbera D'Alba comes from a single vineyard named Pian Romualdo, a unique red wine full of passion and fire.
