The Louis Latour Ardèche Chardonnay 2023 is a fresh, rounded white wine for those who appreciate Southern French ripeness with a clean, polished style. Behind this wine is Maison Louis Latour's Ardèche project, which has been bringing its Burgundian know-how to the region since 1979. The wine bears the IGP Ardèche designation of origin. What is IGP Ardèche? It is a protected geographical indication that establishes the regional origin of the wine.
Vineyards and region
The origin gives this wine its own balance between ripe fruit and fresh tension.
- Location / Origin: This wine comes from the Côteaux de l'Ardèche, within the IGP Ardèche in the south of France. According to Louis Latour, this region lies at the crossroads of northern and southern France, which says a lot about the character of the wine.
- Altitude: The vineyards are located around 270 m above sea level. This helps to combine Mediterranean ripeness with retained freshness.
- Soil: The subsoil consists of clay and limestone. This combination is excellent for this style and gives the wine both roundness and a tighter mineral line.
- Climate & Influences: Ardèche has a Mediterranean climate, but without pronounced extremes. This combination of sun and balanced conditions ensures consistent ripeness and beautiful balance here.
- Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 25 years old, the yield is around 45 hl/ha, and the harvest is done mechanically. This provides Louis Latour with a reliable and precise base for this cuvée.
Vinification and aging
In the cellar, Louis Latour consciously opts for purity and control here.
- Fermentation: Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with full malolactic conversion. This keeps the aromatics clear and simultaneously adds suppleness to the structure.
- Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel. This keeps the style fresh, direct, and fruit-driven, without wood pushing the origin or fruit into the background.
Grape composition
Here, everything revolves around one grape that gets a remarkably accessible and elegant expression in Ardèche.
- 100% Chardonnay – IGP Ardèche: Chardonnay forms the complete basis here and gives the wine its combination of roundness, fresh citrus tension, and refined floral notes. In this region, this results in a style that feels ripe but remains beautifully balanced.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Pale gold in the glass, with flint, acacia blossom, and citrus on the nose. The attack is supple and round, supported by mild acidity and a fresh, clear line. In the finish, floral notes and candied lemon linger beautifully.
- Serving temperature: 10–12 °C works best here, as this range beautifully highlights both the floral finesse and the fresh citrus line.
- Dishes: This wine is best enjoyed as an aperitif, with fine charcuterie, or with fish.
More information about Maison Louis Latour
Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and remains independent and family-owned. This combination of tradition and innovation is also reflected in Ardèche, where the house has been working with local growers since 1979, translating its Burgundian precision to a more southerly origin. The result is a white wine that is accessible but clearly bears the signature of a great Burgundy house.
