Vintage Report

The 2020 vintage of Amarone della Valpolicella received a rating of 90 points, indicating excellent quality. The wine is still a bit youthful, meaning it will benefit from further bottle aging.
The history of the Sopra Sasso winery all begins in the 1950s, when a former sailor and hotel owner set out to establish his own winery. His love for the Veneto region was immense, and he moved to Colà di Lazise, in the province of Verona. Initially, this beautiful winery produced only a white Lugana and a red Valpolicella wine. But with great courage and perseverance, the Sasso family has also been producing their flagship wine, the Sopra Sasso Amarone della Valpolicella, since the 1970s.

The old vineyard for the Amarone Della Valpolicella

Today, SopraSasso has over 84 hectares of vineyards and produces a wide range of exquisite wines. The highlight is this royal wine, the Amarone della Valpolicella. This wine is made with all the traditions of this red wine. This means it's made from Corvina Veronese and Molinara grapes, all grown in the best and oldest vineyards in Veneto. The old vineyard is now producing a magnificent, full harvest, and all the bunches are harvested by hand. The bunches are then treated like royalty. They are literally laid out on beds and then placed in drying houses. These drying houses are characteristic of the Veneto landscape. The grapes dry in these houses and lose a significant portion of their weight. The juice that remains after three months of drying is, as you can imagine, exceptionally full and powerful. This technique is called appassimento and is always used with Amarone wines. After pressing, this red wine also undergoes wood aging in oak barrels in the cellars of SopraSasso.

Full and very powerful this SopraSasso Amarone

It's simply a celebration; it all starts the moment you open this bottle. We smell a beautiful aroma of black cherries, plums, and blackberries. The palate is velvety smooth with very full flavors of dried black fruit and lovely notes of currants and vanilla. On the back of the tongue, we noted nuances of chocolate, coffee, caramel, and cedar. But above all, it's a wine you'll never forget, wonderfully full of such soft flavors.
