Pizarras de Otero is made from the Mencía grape from the beautiful Bierzo wine region in Spain. This wine is made by Martín Códax. This renowned winemaker manages to achieve exceptional smoothness in this red Pizarras de Otero. But that's not easy, as a great deal of work is required to achieve this result. It all starts in the old vineyards, as the Mencía grapes come from four different vineyards: Otero, Hornija, Corullón, and Valtuille. Each contributes its own specific characteristics to this Pizarras de Otero Bierzo.

The old vineyard of Pizarras de Otero Bierzo

Unique is the best way to describe the Pizarras de Otero vineyard. The Mencia vines are a good eighty years old. This immense age gives the juice its incredible strength and suppleness. At perfect ripeness, the bunches are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Afterward, a short two-month oak aging period awaits in the Pizarras de Otero cellars. This allows the Mencia from Bierzo to recover in peace and quiet and acquire the light qualities of the barrel.

The aroma and taste of the red wine Pizarras de Otero

The aroma bursts with fruit, with notes of blueberry, blackberry, cherry, and violet, a pure seduction. The palate is also a feast for the eyes: what a beautiful red wine, with lovely flavors of black and red fruit, lovely acidity, and freshness, with plenty of depth and length. The finish is full and fruity with soft nuances of red fruit. This red wine also pairs well with a wide variety of dishes, such as cured meats, coq au vin, pasta, and, of course, a nice piece of chicken or turkey is delicious with this red wine. But this Pizarras de Otero Bierzo is best enjoyed as an evening wine; it's wonderfully smooth and seductive, making every evening a celebration.
