Montepulciano

Buy or order Montepulciano wine

Montepulciano is a grape variety often grown in the beautiful vineyards of Abruzzo. It's often confused with the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany. However, the grape grows primarily in Abruzzo. It may be derived from the Tuscan town of Montepulciano; it's suspected that this grape originated there long ago. However, no one knows for sure.

Where is Montepulciano grown?

Back to Abruzzo, where the Montepulciano grape is now very well-known and produces beautiful, full-bodied wines. The beautiful purple bunches are large and powerful. This is due to the ripe climate in which they grow. Plenty of sunshine combined with some cool wind and nighttime temperatures make for a calm growing season. There's a great diversity in the wines, from top-notch wines like Montepulciano d'Abruzzo or the Rosso Conero Riserva from the Marche region. But also plenty of ripe and smooth wines, as the Montepulciano grape is known for. This grape brings abundant richness, softness, and finesse to Italian wines.

What does a Montepulciano wine taste like?

So, what are the flavor characteristics of the Montepulciano grape? Broadly speaking, the grape offers aromas of black fruit, a touch of minerality, and usually a hint of plum. Fuller, more substantial wines emphasize coffee grounds, leather, earthy notes, and, of course, vanilla and cedar. The great Montepulciano wines are always aged in oak. This is an important period for the Montepulciano grape, as it transforms fruity notes into powerful nuances through aging in oak barrels.

How long can I keep a Montepulciano wine? This is always a tricky question, but generally, a young Montepulciano should be consumed within three years. Better wines from Abruzzo, such as Rosso Conero, can age in the bottle for up to eight years. Provided, of course, that they are stored properly. A cool, dark place is essential.
