Origin and vineyards
The grape is primarily grown in the coastal regions of the Cape, where the Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights is ideal for ripening. Well-known areas include Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Swartland. The soils here consist of granite and slate, which gives the grape structure and depth. The combination of sun, sea breezes, and soil conditions makes Pinotage a grape that achieves the same quality nowhere else.
Grape and style
Pinotage can produce a variety of styles. Often, you'll taste dark fruit notes such as dark cherries, menthol, dark chocolate, and olives, complemented by spicy and earthy notes. In younger versions, the fruity character predominates, while oak-aged Pinotage develops richer aromas. Legally, there are no strict aging requirements, but producers often choose oak aging to enhance complexity. Pinotage also forms the basis for the distinctive South African Cape Blend, in which the grape character blends beautifully with international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
Colour
Pinotage is characterized in red wines by a ruby-red to deep purple color.
Storage and serving
A classic Pinotage can easily age for five to ten years, especially when oak-aged. Younger, fruity versions are best enjoyed within three to five years. Serve Pinotage preferably at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius to fully appreciate the balance of fruit and spice.
