La Giaretta Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2021 Veneto, Italy
La Giaretta Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2021 is a powerful red wine from the heart of Valpolicella, made with the traditional appassimento (drying) of grapes before pressing. After harvest, the grapes are laid on wooden racks and only pressed in January, which greatly concentrates the flavor. This Amarone combines ripe cherries, preserved morello cherries, a firm structure, and a full, balanced taste with the recognizable depth of Valpolicella Classico.
Vineyards and Region
La Giaretta is located in Valgatara, in the municipality of Marano di Valpolicella, one of the classic zones north of Verona.
• Location / Origin: The wine comes from Valpolicella DOCG Classico, the historical heart of the appellation. This area is strongly associated with wines such as Valpolicella, Ripasso, Recioto, and Amarone.
• Estate: La Giaretta operates from Valgatara, in the middle of Valpolicella. The winery manages its own vineyards and produces wines that clearly lean on the local grapes and traditions of the region.
• Wine Style: Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is made from dried grapes. This gives the wine more concentration, power, and aging potential than a regular Valpolicella.
Grape Composition
This Amarone is made from the classic grape varieties that La Giaretta also uses for Recioto.
• Corvina – Valpolicella: Corvina gives the wine its cherry fruit, fresh structure, and recognizable Veronese signature.
• Corvinone – Valpolicella: Corvinone brings more body, darker fruit, and extra spice to the blend.
• Rondinella – Valpolicella: Rondinella supports the color, roundness, and fruity softness of the wine.
Vinification and Aging
The power of this Amarone lies in the drying of the grapes and the long aging thereafter.
• Harvest & Appassimento: The best grapes of the harvest are laid on wooden racks to dry. What is appassimento? Appassimento is the process of drying grapes, which causes moisture to evaporate and concentrates the aromas, sugars, and structure.
• Pressing: The dried grapes are not pressed until January. This late pressing results in a richer, more powerful must that forms the basis for the full style of Amarone.
• Aging: The wine ages for a minimum of 2 years and then undergoes further refinement in the bottle. This combination provides more roundness, depth, and a firmer, better-integrated structure.
• Alcohol Content: At 16.5% alcohol, this Amarone has a lot of power and body, fitting for the concentrated grapes and long aging.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
In the glass, this Amarone is ruby red, with an intense aroma of cherries and morello cherries preserved in alcohol. The taste is full, robust, and exceptionally balanced, with ripe fruit, round power, and a long, warm finish. With additional bottle aging, the wine gains even more depth and softness.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Amarone around 18 °C and preferably open the bottle a little beforehand, so that the aroma, power, and ripe fruit notes can fully develop.
• Food Pairings: Excellent with brasato (braised beef), stewed beef, game dishes, rich main courses, aged cheeses, and as a meditation wine after dinner.
Awards
• 4.3 stars, Vivino: A very strong user rating for this classic Amarone della Valpolicella Classico from La Giaretta.
