The 2020 vintage for dry wines from Portugal received an excellent score of 92 points. The wines are characterized as still tannic and youthful, indicating good aging potential.

The showpiece of Portuguese winery Terra d'Alter. The grapes for this Telhas Tinto are grown in the vineyards of Alentejo, a large wine region in the southern half of Portugal. This time, it's not one of the impressive indigenous grape varieties, but two internationally renowned all-rounders. The Terra d'Alter Telhas Tinto is made of 95 percent Syrah grapes. This promises to be a characterful wine. A special feature of this wine is that it also contains 5 percent Viognier—yes, a white grape. Because Terra d'Alter adds a small percentage to this Telhas Tinto, the wine becomes fresher and more friendly. The full-bodied and spicy notes are certainly still present, but this makes it a delightfully pleasant wine to drink at any time of day.

The best quality grapes for Terra d'Alter wines

Terra d'Alter was founded in 2004 when two family-owned wineries with long winemaking traditions merged and joined forces with Australian winemaker Peter Bright. Located in the Alto Alentejo (the higher, cooler part of the Alentejo), they cultivate their vines sustainably with low yields to ensure the winery receives the highest quality grapes. Originally from Australia, Peter combines his extensive experience with Portuguese winemaking tradition. The result is fantastic, fruit-filled wines.

The vinification process of Terra d'Alter Telhas Rood

Before bottling, the wine is first aged in oak barrels. This wine spends a full 24 months in the Terra d'Alter cellars. And the result is truly impressive. The aroma is simply fantastic. You'll feel thirsty and want to drink this Telhas Tinto. What stands out in the aroma is the lush scent of violets, largely due to the addition of Viognier. You'll also clearly notice the spice that Syrah imparts to this Portuguese red wine. Take a sip, and you'll know for sure: this is delicious! Maturity and spice blend beautifully in this Terra d'Alter Telhas Tinto. Swirl the red wine around your mouth again, and the vanilla and oak notes will be released. Wow! This is definitely a wine you shouldn't miss!
