The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Salentein Barrel Selection Merlot is a full-bodied, soft red wine from the high-altitude Uco Valley. Red fruit, spices, and cedarwood come together in a supple style with enough structure for the dinner table.

Its location by the Andes ensures a distinct difference between day and night temperatures.

    • Location / origin: Alto Valle de Uco, the high part of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina.
    • Altitude: The vineyards involved are situated at more than 1,200 m above sea level.
    • Soil: Coarse, stony material allows excess water to drain away easily.
    • Climate & influences: Sunny, warm days are alternated with cool nights due to air descending from the Andes. This helps the grapes develop aromas and maintain freshness.

During fermentation, the contact between juice and skins is actively managed.

    • Fermentation: With the rack and return technique, the fermenting juice is temporarily separated from the skins and then returned. This draws color, flavor, and tannins from the skins into the wine.
    • Oak aging: Maturation in oak barrels adds structure and spicy wood accents and helps soften the tannins.

The fruity character and supple texture are central.

    • Merlot – Uco Valley: Provides ripe red fruit, round tannins, and a full, accessible flavor.

    More about Bodegas Salentein

The Dutchman Mijndert Pon started the Salentein project in 1997. The winery was given a striking cross shape, designed to keep the route of grapes and wine through the cellar short. Below ground, the barrels lie in a cool aging room: a practical design that became a recognizable face of the estate.
