Bodegas Campillo Reserva Colección 2019 is a serious Rioja for grilled meats, stews, and dinners where you're looking for more than just ripe fruit. The character of this wine primarily comes from its long aging of at least 22 months in French and American oak barrels, allowing spiciness, toast, and depth to beautifully intertwine with the fruit. This longer aging directly corresponds to the Reserva category. What is Reserva in Rioja? For red Rioja, it means a total aging of at least 36 months in barrel and bottle combined, with at least 12 months in oak and at least 6 months in bottle.

Vineyards and region

Its origin lies in the heart of Rioja, with a clear link to Rioja Alavesa and the influence of altitude and coolness.

  • Location / Origin: This wine falls under D.O.Ca. Rioja, one of Spain's highest origin categories. Bodegas Campillo itself is located in Laguardia, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, in Rioja Alavesa.
  • Altitude: Within the Campillo estate, the most important vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the Cantabrian mountains, at an altitude of 650–720 m. This gives the grapes a cooler growing season than seen in many warmer parts of Spain.
  • Climate & Influences: In these plots, temperatures are 3–4 °C lower than the D.O.Ca. Rioja average, and there is more wind, with clear differences between day and night temperatures. This helps to build freshness, structure, and aging potential in the wine.
  • Soil: Rioja Alavesa is characterized here by clay-limestone and clay-iron soils. Such soils are well-suited to Tempranillo, providing grip, tension, and a firm backbone.
  • Vineyard: Campillo works with 150 hectares of its own vineyards and vines aged 30–70 years. The plots are located within a 10 km radius of the winery, allowing for quick processing of the fruit.

Vinification and aging

The cellar approach here mainly revolves around time, barrel aging, and building complexity.

  • Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for at least 22 months in French and American oak barrels. This gives the wine more spiciness, toast, cocoa, and extra roundness in the tannins, without the structure losing its elegance.
  • Alcohol percentage: With 14% alcohol, this Reserva has sufficient power for its oak aging and broad, gastronomic style.

Grape composition

This Reserva is entirely built on 1 grape, precisely what gives it its classic Rioja signature.

  • Tempranillo – Rioja: Tempranillo forms the complete base and gives the wine its combination of ripe red and dark fruit, structure, acidity, and long aging potential.

Tasting notes and serving tips

Cherry red in the glass, with a ruby rim and an intense nose of fruit, spices, toast, and cocoa. In the mouth, this Reserva is structured and elegant, with a beautiful acidity that gives it tension and length. The finish lingers for a very long time, keeping the whole deep, spicy, and balanced.

  • Serving temperature: 15–18 °C works best here, as this range allows both the ripe fruit and the spicy oak influence and structure to open up well.
  • Dishes: Grilled meats, stews, mushrooms, ham, tuna, cod, semi-matured cheeses, rice, and pasta pair very naturally with this wine, as it brings both power and freshness.

Awards

  • Gold Medal, Berliner Wine Trophy 2017 (2010): A gold medal for an earlier vintage, which clearly shows that this cuvée has been internationally recognized for some time.
  • Silver Medal, International Wine Competition Germany 2016 (2011): This earlier vintage also received international recognition, underlining the consistent quality of the wine.
  • 90 points, International Wine Cellar, Josh Reynolds (2010): A strong international rating for an earlier vintage, fitting for a Reserva with clear complexity and length.
  • Silver Medal, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2015 (2010): Further confirmation that this cuvée also holds its own in competitions.
  • Silver Bacchus, Premios Bacchus 2015 (2010): Another award for an earlier vintage, supporting the reputation of this wine over several years.
  • 4.1 stars, Vivino: An excellent score that shows Campillo Reserva Colección is also widely appreciated by wine lovers.

More information about Bodegas Campillo

Bodegas Campillo emerged from the dream project of Julio Faustino Martínez, who in 1988, together with his children, started their own château-bodega in Rioja Alavesa. The winery opened in 1990 and became the first bodega in Rioja with a distinct architectural design as a total concept, situated amidst the vineyards. The name refers to Viña Campillo, one of the first family properties of the Martínez Zabala family, and suits a house that consciously brings together wine, landscape, and architecture.
