2022 was a very good year for Rioja, characterized by warm and dry conditions. This resulted in ripe grapes with good concentration and structure, yielding wines that are both powerful and approachable.

Coto Mayor, a winery born out of a pure love for Rioja winemaking, was founded in 1970 by a group of winegrowers who shared a single goal: to combine their knowledge and passion for winemaking in Bodega Coto Mayor. And they succeeded, as the farmers owned some of the finest vineyards in Rioja. With these fantastic grapes, a beautiful wine was inevitable. And so it was, today the Coto Mayor winery has grown enormously. The vineyards comprise a total of 110 hectares. Many winegrowers have since joined Coto Mayor to further expand their reach and expand their expertise. With all their knowledge and experience, the winery has recently invested heavily in vineyard improvements, modern winemaking techniques, and new oak barrels, among other things. All this without compromising the ancient Spanish traditions. Because a Rioja wine must always be distinct in both aroma and taste.

This best-selling red wine from Coto Mayor is made with Tempranillo grapes, which originate from the Oyón (Alava) regions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Here, the ancient vines, some 70 years old, produce a magnificent harvest. The climate is perfect, with abundant sunshine, cool breezes, and a strong soil structure. Once the grapes are brought to Coto Mayor, they are naturally aged in oak barrels for up to 12 months after vinification. American oak from various regions is used. This diversity gives the Crianza its strength and richness.

A beautiful, classic Rioja Crianza with ripeness and smoothness—that's what this Coto Mayor represents. Grab a large glass to unleash all the aromas and flavors. Upon pouring, we see a dark red color with a purple hue that's very inviting. With our noses over the glass, we detect hints of fruity aromas like berries and cherries. But also notes of vanilla, oak, and spices are clearly discernible. The rich, yet very smooth flavor offers nuances of black fruit, spices, cedar, and dark chocolate. This accessible Rioja has a long yet pleasant finish, making it a perfect pairing with a light meat.
