Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage in the Rioja region received an excellent rating of 92 points according to the Robert Parker Vintage Chart. It is a very high-quality year, and the wines are still in a youthful stage.
The grapes for this Rioja Blanco Fermentado en Barrics were planted long ago in the best locations, and Luis Canas benefits from this today. The finest grapes from the old vineyards are carefully harvested, resulting in a wine with subtle aromas and a unique character.

Special blend wine from Luis Canas

Luis Cañas Viñas Viejas Rioja Blanco Fermentado en Barrica originates from the beautiful vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. This wine is a blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia Riojana grapes, sourced from old vines planted in the so-called "cabezadas," the highest and poorest areas of the vineyards. The average age of these vineyards is impressive, at 57 years, and they are spread across the villages of Villabuena, Leza, and Navaridas. These vineyards are located at altitudes ranging from 450 meters to 620 meters above sea level, allowing them to benefit from the region's unique climatic conditions. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand at peak ripeness and carefully selected, both in the vineyard and on a sorting table, to retain only the finest bunches and grapes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in both French and American oak barrels. Following fermentation, the wine is aged on the lees, with regular bâtonnage (stirring of the lees) for five months. This process contributes to the wine's fullness and creaminess, while also enhancing its texture and complexity.
