The Basque white wines from the Basque Country

Like most northern Spanish wine regions, the Basque Country primarily produces white wines. By far the most popular wine in the Basque Country is Txakoli. This typical Spanish wine is made from the Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarrabi Belta grapes. These grapes produce brightly colored wines with a lively and especially fresh flavor. A beautiful example is the Zudugarai Getariako Txakolina. As soon as you open the cap and pour the wine, you immediately enjoy a beautiful bouquet of white fruit combined with balsamic vinegar and herbs. A beautiful and intense flavor with fresh acidity that adds a touch of excitement to the wine. Red wines are almost nonexistent in this region. The most widely planted red grape in the Basque Country is the Hondarrabi Belta. It is relatively rare in the landscape, and primarily white wines are made from these red grapes. And although the two grape varieties share the same name, they are in no way related.

The rugged landscape of the Basque Country experiences abundant rainfall and relatively low temperatures. Thanks to the sea breeze, temperatures don't exceed 30 degrees Celsius in summer and won't drop below ten degrees Celsius in winter. This offers relatively stable temperatures year-round. The vines benefit from the soil composed of slate rocks. The regions of the Basque Country can be divided into Getariako Txakoli, Bizkaiko Txakoli, and Txakoli de Álava. The largest wine region is Getariako Txakoli.

A red wine from the Basque Country

Although we primarily enjoy white wines from the Basque Country, red wines are also produced. We have a beautiful example in our range: the Hiruzta Txakoli Tinto. It shimmers cherry red in the glass with rich aromas of red and black fruit, with strawberry and blackcurrant standing out against a balsamic background and delicate vegetal notes. It is very fresh on the palate with balanced acidity, good palate movement, and a long finish with abundant aromatic varieties.
