Order Bierzo wines

In northeastern Spain lies the Bierzo wine region, where the focus is on high-quality wines. It's no wonder this Spanish wine region has been awarded DO status. The fertile soils produce wines that offer a transition between the lighter wines of Galicia and the heavier ones from the Duero Valley. A beautiful compromise, where the best red wines are made from the Mencia grape, while the Godello grape plays a leading role in the white wines.

Classic Spanish wine

In Bierzo, you can enjoy both white and red wines. The reds, in particular, are of top quality and are enjoyed worldwide. White wines from Bierzo are generally refreshing and highly enjoyable. The Mencia grape variety, widely planted here, is very similar to Cabernet Franc. Rosé wines are also found in the region. The area thus offers a diverse selection, with red wines pairing well with game dishes or a cheese board, whites delicious with tapas and paella, and rosés ideal as an aperitif or with light dishes. A notable feature is that much of the wine production still takes place in traditional concrete vats. Larger wineries primarily use stainless steel tanks, while smaller wineries sometimes use wood.

Climate and terroir

But the foundation, of course, lies in the terroir. Bierzo is situated in a sheltered mountain valley. It encompasses a total of 7,500 hectares of vineyards, located in the river valleys at altitudes of 500 to 650 meters. The soil structures are highly diverse, from alluvial in the lower elevations to slate in the higher mountainous areas. These mountains create a temperate climate with frequent sunshine and less rainfall than, for example, Galicia.

The local grape varieties Mencia and Godello

Seventy percent of the vineyards are planted with the Mencia grape variety. The wines made from this local grape have an aromatic profile, with red fruit being particularly prominent. When the grapes are fully ripe, juicy, smooth, and balanced wines are almost naturally produced. For white wines, we quickly arrive at the Godello grape variety. This grape produces juicy and fresh wines. The Mara Martin Godello Monterrei from the Martin Codax winery is a wonderful example of what this grape has to offer. A delicate wine from Bierzo with notes of exotic fruit and a juicy and lively palate.

Most beautiful winery in Bierzo

Experts believe Bierzo has the potential to develop into a major Spanish wine region. The region's large and small wineries play a significant role in this development. One winery that has mastered the tricks of the trade is Bodega Del Abad. Perhaps one of the finest wineries in Bierzo, they produce the finest wines made with the Mencía grape. They also focus on the other well-known local grape, Godello. Bodega Del Abad has become synonymous with fine, aromatic wines from Bierzo.
