The history of Burgenland
Burgenland boasts a rich history dating back to well before the Romans. Afterward, it was the church that further expanded winemaking in this region. Burgenland has only been part of Austria since 1921; before that, it was part of Hungary. And this is also reflected in the red wines. The combination of cultures, traditions, and languages is reflected in the winemaking. All in all, the region comprises approximately 19,000 vineyards, running in a narrow strip from north to south. The south of Burgenland primarily produces red wines, while the north focuses primarily on white grape varieties. The climate is almost uniform throughout the region.
