Wines from Catalonia

In northeastern Spain, on the border with France, lies the Catalonia wine region. Catalan wines are generally lighter, firmer, and more subtle. Each region within Catalonia naturally has its own unique characteristics. And in recent decades, the wines have become more modern and accessible. There's something for every wine lover, from refreshing cavas to full-bodied reds.

The beginning of wines from Catalonia

The wine region stretches along the Mediterranean coast, from the French border to the Ebro River. Wine has likely been produced here since the 5th century BC. Over the years, grape varieties have been cultivated in various ways. The Counts of Barcelona ruled the region for many centuries. At the end of the 19th century, this region also suffered the devastation of the vine louse, permanently destroying many vineyards. After joining the EU, modern techniques were increasingly employed, and it was time to rebuild and grow. Catalonia received DO status in 1999. This DO status was given to the region as a commercial incentive. This allowed 200 bodegas that previously did not fall under specific DOs in the region to produce wine with the same status in Catalonia.

The famous Cava from Catalonia

Catalonia is primarily known for its cava. This is primarily produced in the renowned Penedes region. The valley is protected by the Montserrat mountain range, making it an ideal location for grape cultivation. The production process for cava is very similar to that of Champagne, only the latter is aged for a shorter period. A beautiful example from this region is the Pere Ventura Tresor Reserva Cava. This perfect combination of honey and fruit aromas comes from vines that are on average 15 years old and enjoy stunning views from 340 meters above sea level. A truly delightful drinking experience, making summer dreams come true anytime!

Quality wines from Catalonia

But besides the well-known grape varieties for Catalan Cava, other varieties are also being planted. These include Monastrell and Bobal, as well as Pinot Blanc, Muller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Syrah, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. These grapes have played a significant role in the development of the new style of wines from the Catalan wine region. These wines are often blends of different grape varieties. Take the Pinord Clos del Mas Priorat, for example. A powerful yet elegant red wine from one of Catalonia's most beautiful wine regions. Those who appreciate a white wine with depth will find it in Bosc de Carlac. They have created a white wine blended from Chardonnay, Muscat, and Viognier. The incredible depth of this white wine is almost heavenly. The aroma reveals abundant tropical fruit, such as soft apricots and fresh peaches. The fresh yet tight acidity in the aftertaste, made possible by the Muscat, completes Bosc de Carlac Wit.
