Austrian wines from Kamptal

Kamptal is known for its beautiful nature, with numerous hiking trails and fairytale paths. But be sure to also explore the many wine routes with exquisite wines. It is, after all, one of the most successful and important wine regions in Austria. The Kamp River flows through this beautiful region, bordered by various vineyards. The area features varying elevations, and the terraced vineyards are primarily planted with Riesling and Grüner Veltiner. The result? Fresh and light wines of high quality.

Climate and soil structures

In Kamptal, hot days alternate with cool nights. The wide temperature ranges allow the grapes to ripen well and develop a wealth of delicious aromas, as well as a mineral character and pleasant acidity. The vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 200 to 300 meters. With these high temperature fluctuations, viticulture can be quite challenging. The soil structures are also very diverse, ranging from rock and bedrock to sandstone, gravel, and clay terraces. In the south, we find a slightly hillier area where the steep terraces have been cleared for Riesling, resulting in powerful, more minimalist wines. Looking towards the Danube, the soil structures are predominantly loam and loess. Grüner Veltliner thrives here.

Towering quality wines

In the vineyards, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling clearly dominate, with Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris also making their mark. The focus is clearly on white wines. These two major grape varieties also justify the Kamptal DAC designation, which refers to the region's origins. This abbreviation is exclusively used for fruity Grüner Veltliner and aromatic Riesling. It certainly represents quality wine. A major player in the Austrian wine world is undoubtedly Weingut Karl Steininger, with its exceptionally high-quality wines. The lion's share of Steininger's production features Gruner Veltliner. The tastiest and most accessible is perhaps the Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal. This white wine perfectly showcases all the aspects of Gruner Veltliner.

Austrian wines from Kamptal

Zweigelt is the primary grape variety used for Kamptal's red wines. It's a blue-black grape that often combines with a refreshing and fruity bouquet. The Steininger Zweigelt Novemberlese beautifully reflects how this grape develops in the Austrian mountains. A magnificent bouquet of dark fruit, even with a hint of chocolate. The taste is pure and full, making it a complete wine. Austrian wines from Kamptal never disappoint and demonstrate that even in a lesser-known wine region, different grape varieties can develop beautifully.
