Maule Valley is one of Chile's oldest wine-growing regions. It's also the country's largest wine-producing region. This is why Maule Valley is often associated with quantity rather than quality, precisely because the region produces so much wine. The traditional Pais grape is increasingly making way for international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere.

Increasingly higher quality wines from Maule Valley

The history of Maule Valley dates back to the beginning of Spanish colonization. The region was originally known for its quantity rather than quality. In the past, it primarily produced bulk wines from the Pais vine. Only in recent decades have winemakers made significant strides in quality. There's been increasing acceptance of international grape varieties, which also greatly benefits quality.

High yields in Maule Valley

The Maule Valley boasts an ideal climate for wine production. It rarely gets extremely cold, but it also rarely gets extremely hot. The warmth is interspersed with slightly cooler nights, allowing the grapes to ripen well and develop their fruity aromas. Daytime and nighttime temperatures vary considerably thanks to the Andes Mountains that run parallel to the Maule Valley. The valley owes its name to the Maule River, which also creates the valley's alluvial soils. These vary considerably, including granite, red clay, loam, and gravel. The soils absorb water well, and the vineyards are located on the surrounding slopes. This makes the soil more fertile and yields high.

Typical Maule Valley wines

Like the rest of Chile, the Maule Valley is primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, followed by Sauvignon Blanc and Pais grapes. Those curious about a typical Maule Valley wine should try the Longavi Glup Pais. This wine is produced with 100% high-quality Pais grapes. The result is incredibly pure, with aromas of red fruit and rose petals complemented by subtle spice notes. On the palate, flavors of raspberry jam and sour cherry emerge clearly. A wonderful balance between aromas and flavors. For those who prefer white wines, the Chardonnay Reserva from Carta Vieja is a beautiful Chilean example. The vineyards for this oak-aged Chardonnay are found on one of the oldest estates in the heart of the Maule Valley. The aromas reveal white peaches, banana, lychee, and a delicate lemon note. These blend with the aromas of roasted hazelnut and vanilla. Broad in the mouth with a good acid balance that makes the fruit more present.
