Old vines of Vergne and Dolcetto, grown in the Ravera vineyard in Novello, form the basis for this wine. Vaira considers Dolcetto a grape that requires plenty of sun and deserves all the attention and care of a Prima Donna. The vineyards are cultivated sustainably, and the harvest is carried out manually.

The beginning of Vajra winery

GD Vajra was founded in 1972 by Aldo Vajra. The initials refer to his grandfather, from whom he inherited the vineyards. He and his wife built the company with the goal of producing wines under their own label. These wines are made exclusively from their own grapes. Over the years, daughter Francesca and sons Giuseppe and Isidoro also joined the company. A remarkable family business that has built a reputation through innovation and collaboration with the University of Turin, placing it among the top Barolo wines. Historically, Dolcetto was grown in prime land, just above the Nebbiolo vineyards. At Vajra, they remain true to this approach. Dolcetto d'Alba DOC pays tribute to a beautiful, often overlooked Piedmontese heritage. It's a pure, vibrant, and fruity expression of the varietal, ideal for a wide range of food pairings, from appetizers to pasta and vegetables, and light proteins like white meat and egg-based dishes.

Manual harvest for Dolcetto D'Alba

The grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of September. Because the vineyards are located at high altitude, they allow for a longer hanging period and full ripening. A mild vinification typically lasts up to fifteen days. The wine is pickled at least twice before malolactic fermentation, which takes place in stainless steel vats. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba DOC has a minimal aging period, only in stainless steel, and is bottled in the spring following the harvest. Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2018 has a brilliant purple color. The nose is fresh and exuberant, with notes of red strawberry, mulberry, saturated deer, and fresh thyme. The palate bursts with blue fruit and fresh plums, crisp tannins, and an elegant finish with a delightful almond and spicy aftertaste.
