Provence

Buy Provence Rose

In the far southeast of France, near the Mediterranean Sea, lies France's oldest wine region: Provence. This beautiful, hilly region is known for its rosé wines, but also produces aromatic reds and fruity whites. Winemaking in Provence has been going on for over 2,600 years. It began with the Greeks and was later adopted by the Romans, who gave this region the name Provence, which means "our province" in Dutch.

The pink wines from Provence

When you think of Provence, rosé wines quickly come to mind. 2,600 years ago, red wines weren't as red as we know them today. This was because the grapes were pressed quickly and then processed into wine. This results in a paler color. As a result, Provence quickly became known for its pink wines, or rosés. The main base for rosé wines is the Mourvedre grape. This is often blended with Cinsault and Grenache. Rosé wines are primarily dry and must contain at least 20 percent Saignée wine. This is made by fermenting freshly pressed red grapes. But Provence also offers red and white wines. The reds are full-bodied and have an aromatic character, while the whites are very fruity.

The two largest regions of Provence

Provence has nine distinct regions, the two largest being the Cotes de Provence and Coteaux d'Aix en Provence. The former is the largest region in Provence, producing almost 75 percent of all Provence wines. And rosé lovers' hearts beat even faster in this region, as 89 percent of the production consists of dry rosé wines. In addition, we also have the well-known Coteaux d'Aix en Provence, which produces rosé, red, and white wines. The most important red grapes are Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Cinsault. However, there's also room for white grapes such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Beautiful Provence wineries

Another well-known region is Bandol. This is home to the Mourvedre grape. You'll find powerful red wines there. A beautiful example is the Bunan Mas de la Rouvière Bandol Red. This deep ruby-red wine has a broad and powerful bouquet, yet the palate is surprisingly smooth. A beautiful combination and a perfect reflection of what the Bandol region has to offer. They also offer wonderful rosé wines in their selection. Another beautiful winery in Provence is the relatively new Fredavelle Coteaux d'Aix de Provence. What began as a hobby has grown into a magnificent wine selection. They produce wines you don't find every day. A special wine from Fredavelle is the Domaine Fredavelle Cuvée Inspiration White. This white wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino: a true rarity. With this, Fredavelle proves its strength in the French vineyards.
