Bodegas Campillo Reserva Colección MAGNUM 1.5L 2018 is a serious Rioja for dinners, grilled meats and moments when you want to serve a classic Reserva in a large format. The character of this wine lies in its long ageing of at least 22 months in French and American oak barrels, which beautifully intertwines fruit, toast, cocoa, and spiciness. This directly aligns with the Reserva category. What is Reserva in Rioja? For red Rioja, it means a total maturation of at least 36 months in barrel and bottle combined, with at least 12 months in oak and a minimum of 6 months in bottle.
Vineyards and region
Its origin lies in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, where altitude and coolness largely dictate its style.
- Location / Origin: Bodegas Campillo is located in Laguardia, at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains, in Rioja Alavesa. This is one of the most famous and quality-oriented parts of the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
- Altitude: The main vineyards are situated on the southern slopes of the mountains, between 650 and 720 m in altitude. In Rioja, this is high enough to noticeably slow down ripening and preserve extra freshness.
- Climate & Influences: These parcels are 3–4 °C cooler than the appellation average and experience more wind and significant differences between day and night temperatures. This helps build structure, acidity, and ageing potential.
- Soil: The soils consist of clay limestone and clay iron. Such soils pair well with Tempranillo, giving it grip, tension, and a sturdy backbone.
- Vineyard & Harvest: Campillo works with 150 hectares of its own vineyards, vines aged 30–70 years, and manual harvesting. The parcels are located within a 10 km radius of the winery, allowing the fruit to be processed quickly and precisely.
Vinification and ageing
The cellar approach here is primarily about time, oak ageing, and building complexity.
- Ageing / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for a minimum of 22 months in French and American oak barrels. This gives the wine more spiciness, toast, cocoa, and extra rounding in the tannins, without the structure losing its elegance.
- Alcohol percentage: With 14% alcohol, this Reserva has sufficient strength for its long oak ageing and broad, gastronomic style.
Grape composition
This Reserva is entirely built on one grape, which is precisely what gives it its classic Rioja signature.
- Tempranillo – Rioja: Tempranillo forms the complete base and gives the wine its combination of ripe red and dark fruit, structure, acidity, and long-lasting build.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Cherry red in the glass, with a ruby rim and an intense nose of fruit, spices, toast, and cocoa. On the palate, this Reserva is structured and elegant, with a beautiful acidic line that gives it tension and length. The finish lingers for a very long time, keeping the whole deep, spicy, and balanced.
- Serving temperature: 16–18 °C works best here, as this range allows both the ripe fruit and the spicy oak influence and structure to fully open up.
- Dishes: Grilled meat, baked or grilled potatoes, mushrooms, ham, tuna, cod, semi-hard cheese, rice, pasta, and even a red fruit dessert pair very naturally with this wine, as it beautifully combines power, freshness, and spicy depth.
Accolades

More information about Bodegas Campillo
Bodegas Campillo originated from the dream project of Julio Faustino Martínez, who, together with his children, began building their own château-bodega in Rioja Alavesa in 1988. The winery opened in 1990 and became the first bodega in Rioja with a distinct architectural design as a total concept, situated amidst the vineyards. The name refers to Viña Campillo, one of the Martínez Zabala family's first family estates, and perfectly suits a house that consciously connects wine, landscape, and architecture.
