Umbria

Buy wine from Umbria

It's one of Italy's smallest regions and is known primarily for its hilly and mountainous landscape. Winters here are cold and rainy, while summers are very dry and sunny. While these conditions are ideal for viticulture, this region isn't known for its enormous wine production. Fortunately, the quality of the wines is improving dramatically.

Wines from the heart of Italy

Etruscans and Umbrians planted vines in this region some 3,000 years ago. It's only since the 19th century that the wines have been worth mentioning. This is thanks to the advent of modern winemaking techniques. Today, a fifth of Umbria's wines carry the DOC or DOCG designation, and this number is only expected to increase. The wine region is particularly known for its white Orvieto wines. However, because the climate isn't ideal for white wines, more red than white wines are produced there today.

The red and white wines from Umbria

Orvieto is a light and crisp white wine made from Procanico, a local variety of Trebbiano, and Malvasia. Verdello, Grechetto, and Drupeggio grapes are also grown in the Umbria region. Around the capital, Perugia, we find the hills where the best red grape varieties are planted. The most interesting red wines from Umbria are Torgiano and Montefalco. The former is thanks to the founders of Umbrian wines, the Lungarotti family. A little further south in Umbria, Montefalco is grown. It is a modern and full-bodied dry red wine, of which only a few are produced.

The Mediterranean climate

Summers are dry and sunny, while winters are cold and wet. Umbria enjoys a mild climate, with grapes grown at various altitudes. Thanks to these favorable conditions, wine has been produced here for thousands of years. Thanks to the hilly terrain, the vineyards enjoy abundant sunshine, rivers, a continental climate, and clay-limestone soil. It offers a diverse range of quality wines, each one authentic.

The quality wineries in Umbria

A major player in this wine region is the Castello della Sala winery, owned by the Antinori family. They are known for their full-bodied white wines. The Bramito della Sala Chardonnay is a beautiful example, developing a strong character thanks to its oak aging. For quality red wines, visit the Barberani winery. It is one of the region's most respected producers and is renowned for its pure and clean wines. With its hillside vineyards, the grapes enjoy ample sunshine. The Barberani Foresco Umbria is an elegant red wine with intense fruit aromas. With a balanced and crisp flavor, this wine has a full body. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, and this drinkable wine uniquely reflects the terroir of the heart of Italy. Umbria, the wine region that has found a beautiful balance between white and red wines, thus bringing a wide range to the market.
