Louis Latour Brouilly 2023 Beaujolais, France
Louis Latour Brouilly 2023 is a red Beaujolais made from Gamay grapes, hailing from Brouilly, one of the Beaujolais crus. The grapes grow on south-facing slopes with pink granite and schist, where abundant sunshine helps the Gamay reach full ripeness. This gives the wine its soft, fruity, and aromatic style, with notes of raspberry, blackberry, fresh tension, and a long finish.
Vineyards and Region
Brouilly is one of the Beaujolais crus, the quality level above the broader Beaujolais appellations.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from Brouilly, within Beaujolais. The vineyards are on south-facing slopes, allowing the vines to receive plenty of sun and for the Gamay grapes to become ripe and aromatic.
• Appellation: What is Brouilly? Brouilly is a Cru du Beaujolais, an appellation known for soft, aromatic red wines with ripe fruit and fresh drinkability.
• Soil: The soil consists of pink schistous granite. This soil warms up well and contributes to the ripeness, fruit expression, and soft structure of the wine.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 45 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful processing of the fruit.
Grape Composition
This red Beaujolais is made entirely from Gamay.
• Gamay – Brouilly: Gamay gives this wine its juicy red fruit, floral aroma, soft tannins, and vibrant freshness. In Brouilly, the grape gains extra ripeness due to the sunny slopes, making the wine feel fuller and more generous than many lighter Beaujolais styles.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification focuses on fruit, suppleness, and a soft, aromatic structure.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in open vats, with whole bunches of grapes. This method is well-suited to Gamay and helps to retain abundant fruit, aroma, and soft tannins in the wine.
• Aging: The wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel tanks. This keeps the raspberry, blackberry, and fresh fruit expression clear, without any influence from wood.
• Aging Potential: This Brouilly has an aging potential of 2–3 years. This aligns well with its fruity, supple style, where freshness and immediate drinking pleasure are central.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
In the glass, Louis Latour Brouilly 2023 has an attractive garnet red color. The aroma opens with raspberry and blackberry, followed by a full, generous taste with notes of forest floor. The finish is fresh, long, and persistent.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Brouilly at 13–15 °C, so that the red fruit, soft tannins, and fresh finish remain beautifully balanced.
• Pairings: Delicious with grilled meats, charcuterie, and aged cheeses.
