Louis Latour Fleurie 2023 Beaujolais, France
Louis Latour Fleurie 2023 is a red Beaujolais made from Gamay from Fleurie, one of the 10 crus of Beaujolais. This cru is known for its refined, aromatic style, and at Louis Latour, it gains extra charm from 30-year-old vines grown on pink granite and schist. The wine combines raspberry, blueberry, freshness, and roundness with a fine tannic structure, keeping it elegant but with clearly more depth than a simple Beaujolais.
Vineyards and region
Fleurie belongs to the highest quality category within Beaujolais and is known for fragrant, soft, and refined red Gamay wines.
• Location / Origin: Fleurie is one of the 10 Crus du Beaujolais. Within Beaujolais, these crus represent the most distinctive origins, each with its own style and soil profile.
• Appellation: What is Fleurie? Fleurie is a cru of Beaujolais known for red wines with great aromatic finesse, juicy fruit, and an elegant structure.
• Soil: The vines are planted on pink granite and schist. These soils warm up well, drain water, and help Gamay achieve ripe fruit, freshness, and a slightly mineral tension.
• Microclimate: Fleurie is prized for the combination of its specific soil and unique microclimate. This combination makes the cru particularly suitable for Gamay, producing fragrance, suppleness, and refinement.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 45 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful processing of whole bunches.
Grape composition
This red Beaujolais is made entirely from Gamay.
• Gamay – Fleurie: Gamay gives this wine its juicy red fruit, floral fragrance, fresh acidity, and supple tannins. In Fleurie, the grape develops an elegant, soft, and aromatic style, with just enough structure to make the wine serious and versatile for food pairing.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims for fruit, fragrance, and a supple yet distinct structure.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in open vats, with whole grape bunches. This method is well-suited to Gamay and helps to retain a lot of aroma, fruit, and soft tannins.
• Aging: The wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel tanks. This ensures that raspberry, blueberry, and the fresh fruit expression remain clear and vibrant, without any influence from wood.
• Aging Potential: This Fleurie has an aging potential of 3–5 years. This suits the combination of fresh fruit, roundness, and fine tannins.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, Louis Latour Fleurie 2023 has a ruby red color with garnet nuances. The aroma opens with raspberry and blueberry, followed by a round, fresh taste in which raspberry reappears. The finish has a fine tannic grip and remains beautifully clean.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Fleurie at 13–15 °C, so that the red fruit, fresh acidity, and fine tannins come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with Bayonne ham, oeufs en gelée, beef Stroganoff, osso buco, charcuterie, and light meat dishes.
Awards
• 92/100, James Suckling (2023): Praised for its dark, floral character, good structure, lively freshness, and tight, energetic finish.
• Excellent, Burgundy Report (2023): Bill Nanson highlights the attractive deep aroma, the broad yet concentrated taste, and the finish with graphite and salinity.
