Vintage Report
Louis Latour Juliénas 2023 Beaujolais, France
Louis Latour Juliénas 2023 is a red Beaujolais cru made from 100% Gamay, sourced from steep slopes with an ideal southern exposure. Juliénas is known as a powerful cru within Beaujolais and, in strong years, can approach appellations like Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon in terms of depth and structure. In this 2023 vintage, red fruit, spice, raspberry, and mint come together in a fresh, juicy style with silky tannins.
Vineyards and Region
Juliénas belongs to the Crus du Beaujolais, the highest origin category within Beaujolais.
• Location and Origin: The grapes come from steep slopes in Juliénas, where the southern exposure helps the Gamay ripen well. This gives the wine more concentration than one would expect from a lighter Beaujolais.
• Appellation: What is Juliénas? Juliénas is one of the Beaujolais crus and is known for red Gamay wines with more power, spice, and aging potential than most simple Beaujolais wines.
• Soil: The vines grow on pink schist-like granite. This soil suits Gamay well and gives the wine its combination of fresh red fruit, fine spice, and structure.
• Vineyard and Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 45 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful selection of the fruit.
Grape Composition
This red Beaujolais is made entirely from Gamay.
• 100% Gamay – Juliénas: Gamay gives this wine its juicy red fruit, fresh acidity, and supple tannins. In Juliénas, the grape gains extra depth and spiciness due to the warm location, steep slopes, and granite-rich soil.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification is traditional and focuses on fruit, freshness, and fine tannins.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in open vats and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This makes the acids rounder and gives the wine a suppler structure.
• Aging: The wine ages for 10–12 months in stainless steel tanks. This keeps the focus on pure red fruit, fresh tension, and the spicy side of Juliénas, without oak influence.
• Aging Potential: Louis Latour Juliénas 2023 can be aged for 3–5 years. With some bottle aging, the fruit, spiciness, and tannins will become softer and more integrated.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
Louis Latour Juliénas 2023 has a garnet red color and an intense aroma of red fruit with a hint of spice. The taste is fresh and juicy, with notes of raspberry and mint. The finish is long, with silky tannins and an elegant spicy tension.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Juliénas at 13–15 °C, so that the red fruit, fresh acidity, and soft tannins come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with grilled meats, charcuterie, poultry, light meat dishes, and cheese.
