Vineyards and region
Marsannay is located in the Côte de Nuits and is known for vibrant, robust red Burgundy.
• Location and origin: Marsannay is located near Dijon, at the northern beginning of the Côte d'Or. The village marks the start of the Route des Grands Crus, the wine route that runs through the heart of Burgundy.
• Appellation: What is Marsannay? Marsannay is an appellation in the Côte de Nuits that received its Appellation Contrôlée in 1987, in recognition of the consistent quality of its wines.
• Soil: The vines grow on clay and limestone. Marsannay's rich iron-rich soil contributes to the vibrant, robust style for which the appellation is known.
• Vineyard and harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 45 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand.
Grape composition
This red Burgundy is made entirely from Pinot Noir.
• 100% Pinot Noir – Marsannay: Pinot Noir gives this wine its morello cherry, red fruit, fine spiciness, and elegant tannins. In Marsannay, the grape develops a slightly more robust structure than in some lighter Burgundy villages, without losing the refinement of the Côte de Nuits.
Vinification and aging
The vinification is classic for red Burgundy and focuses on fruit, structure, and softness.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in open vats and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid, making the wine feel rounder and smoother.
• Aging: The wine ages for 10–12 months in stainless steel tanks. This maintains the emphasis on pure fruit, fresh tension, and the recognisable structure of Marsannay, without distinct oak influence.
• Aging potential: Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge 2023 can be aged for 3–5 years. With some bottle aging, the tannins soften, and the notes of cherry, spices, and liquorice integrate further.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge 2023 has an attractive dark ruby red colour. The aroma is intense, with morello cherries and liquorice, followed by a full-bodied, generous taste with cherry and a hint of spices. The tannins are silky smooth, and the finish is remarkably long.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Marsannay Rouge at 15–17 °C, so that the red fruit, spiciness, and silky tannins combine beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with roasted duck, coq au vin, lamb stew, and aged cheeses.
