The Louis Latour Régnié La Roche 2023 is a Cru Beaujolais with more depth and structure than the light image often associated with Beaujolais. The wine comes from La Roche, a favorably located vineyard within Régnié, giving it more precision, grip, and length than a simple village wine. This origin immediately makes Régnié substantively important. What is Régnié? It is the 10th cru of Beaujolais, officially recognized since 1988.
Vineyards and region
The story really begins here in the northern part of Beaujolais, where granite and microclimate largely dictate the style.
- Location / Origin: Régnié is located in the north of Beaujolais and shares its microclimate with Morgon to the north and Brouilly to the south. This immediately places this wine in a more serious cru area within Beaujolais.
- Soil: The vines grow on pink schist-like granite. This is a poor, stony subsoil that suits Gamay well, providing tension, juiciness, and precision.
- Vineyard: The average age of the vines is 30 years, and the yield is 45 hl/ha. This helps give the fruit sufficient concentration and character.
- Vineyard & Harvest: For this cuvée, harvesting is done by hand. This is fitting for a wine where selection and care in the vineyard are crucial for the final quality.
Vinification and aging
The cellar approach here remains deliberately classic and strict, so that the cru character remains clearly intact.
- Fermentation: Fermentation traditionally takes place in open vats. This gives the wine sufficient extraction and structure, without losing the juicy character of Gamay.
- Aging / Oak aging: Afterwards, the wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel tanks. This keeps the fruit clearly in focus and allows the wine to rest and round out, without any oak influence.
Grape composition
This wine is built entirely on 1 grape, exactly as you would expect from a classic Cru Beaujolais.
- Gamay – Régnié: Gamay forms the complete basis here, giving the wine its juicy red fruit, fresh line, and spicy vibrancy.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Garnet red in the glass, with aromas of strawberry and sous-bois. On the palate, this Régnié is ample and fresh, with notes of blackcurrant and redcurrant in a juicy, beautifully structured frame. The finish lingers long, keeping the whole lively and precise.
- Serving temperature: 13–15 °C works best here, as this range keeps the red fruit fresh while allowing enough room for the structure and spiciness.
- Dishes: Grilled meat, charcuterie, cheese, white meat dishes, and light appetizers pair very naturally here, as this wine combines juiciness with sufficient grip.
