Philippe Sauger Cheverny Rouge 2023 AOC Cheverny, Loire
Philippe Sauger Cheverny Rouge 2023 is a smooth red Loire wine from AOC Cheverny, made from Pinot Noir, Gamay and a small amount of Côt. This blend perfectly matches the Cheverny style: fresh, fruity and lightly spiced, with Pinot Noir for finesse and Gamay for juiciness. The wine comes from Domaine Sauger in Fresnes, a family business active since 1870 in the region around the castles of Cheverny, Chambord, Blois and Chenonceaux.
Vineyards and region
Cheverny is located in the Loire, between the river and the Sologne, where coolness, forest influence and light soils create fresh, fruity wines.
• Location / Origin: Domaine Sauger is located on the left bank of the Loire, in the heart of Loir-et-Cher. Its proximity to the Sologne gives the wine its fresh, accessible Loire character.
• Appellation: What is AOC Cheverny? Cheverny is an appellation in the Loire where red wines always consist of a blend, with Pinot Noir as the main grape and Gamay as an important addition.
• Soil: The vines grow on sandy clay soils. This relatively light soil helps to keep the wine fresh, fruity and smooth.
• Yield: The yield is around 60 hl per hectare. This suits the accessible, fruit-driven style of this Cheverny Rouge.
Grape composition
This red Cheverny is made from 3 grape varieties.
• 70% Pinot Noir – Cheverny: Pinot Noir forms the base of the blend and gives the wine finesse, fresh red fruit and a soft structure.
• 25% Gamay – Cheverny: Gamay brings extra juiciness, freshness and smooth drinking pleasure. This grape makes the wine lively and immediately accessible.
• 5% Côt – Cheverny: Côt, also known as Malbec, provides a small addition of color, spice and structure.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims for pure fruit, smooth tannins and preservation of freshness.
• Harvest & Selection: The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and selected both in the vineyard and in the cellar. This keeps the wine clean and fruit-driven at its base.
• Fermentation: Each grape variety is vinified separately. Maceration lasts 8–12 days at 28 °C, with the duration and remontages adjusted per grape variety.
• Pressing & Malolactic fermentation: After the wine runs off, gentle pressing and malolactic fermentation take place at 18–20 °C. This rounds off the acids and gives the wine a smoother structure.
• Aging: The wine ages for 4–6 months in stainless steel tanks. This ensures that the red fruit remains brightly present, without the influence of wood.
Tasting notes and serving tips
Philippe Sauger Cheverny Rouge 2023 has a clear, lively red color and aromas of red fruit, especially griottes. The taste is fresh, fruity and light-footed, with the juiciness of Gamay and the subtle finesse of Pinot Noir. The finish is smooth, drinkable and perfectly made for youthful drinking pleasure.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Cheverny Rouge at 15–16 °C, so that the red fruit, freshness and soft structure come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with mixed salads, white meat, grilled dishes, light fish dishes and cheeses.
