What is Tempranillo?
The name Tempranillo comes from the Spanish word temprano , meaning "early." This refers to the grape's earlier ripening than many other red varieties. It has been cultivated for centuries and is now considered the backbone of Spanish viticulture.
Origin and vineyards
Tempranillo is native to Spain, primarily Rioja and Ribera del Duero. In Rioja, the grape is often blended with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, while in Ribera del Duero, powerful 100% Tempranillo wines (locally called Tinto Fino) are made. The grape thrives in chalky soils and benefits from a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Outside of Spain, Tempranillo is also found in Portugal (as Tinta Roriz or Aragonez) and in smaller quantities in other countries.
Grape and style
Tempranillo produces wines with a deep ruby red color that morphs into a brick red with age. Younger styles like Joven are fruity and juicy, with notes of cherry and strawberry. Crianzas and Reservas are aged in oak for additional depth, adding vanilla, spice, and a full structure. Gran Reservas are among the most impressive Spanish wines, with extended aging in barrel and bottle, developing complex aromas of leather, tobacco, and dried fruit.
Storage and serving
Tempranillo has excellent aging potential, especially in the higher classifications. A Joven is best enjoyed young, within three years. Crianzas and Reservas mature for five to ten years, while Gran Reservas can often age for twenty years or more. Serve Tempranillo at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius and allow the wine to air out by decanting, allowing the aromas to fully develop .
