Vintage Report

2023 was a solid year for Provence, characterized by a warm and dry summer that ensured well-ripened grapes. The high altitude of Valmoissine helped preserve freshness and elegance in the Pinot Noir.

Louis Latour Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2023 0.375L Var, France

Louis Latour Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2023 0.375L is a half bottle of Pinot Noir from the Var, made at the high-altitude Domaine de Valmoissine near Aups. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 500m, on the site of an old monastery, where sunny summer days and cool nights ensure ripe grapes with freshness and finesse. Due to its southern exposure, the Pinot Noir ripens beautifully and fully, while the altitude helps to keep the fruit vibrant and elegant. This half bottle is ideal when one or two people want to enjoy a smooth, fruity red wine without opening a whole bottle.

Vineyards and region

Valmoissine comes from the Coteaux du Verdon in the Var, a southern French region where Louis Latour cultivates Pinot Noir at high altitude.

Location / Origin: Domaine de Valmoissine is located near Aups, within the IGP Var. The vineyard is situated on the site of an old monastery, giving this cuvée a clear historical reference.

Altitude: The vineyard is located at 500m above sea level. This altitude ensures cool nights, limits the risk of spring frost, and contributes to the freshness and aromatic tension of the Pinot Noir.

Exposure: The vineyard has a southern exposure. This allows the grapes to receive plenty of sun and ripen fully, while the altitude keeps the fruit refined.

Soil: The vines are planted on clay and limestone. Clay provides roundness and fruitiness, while limestone helps to keep the wine fresh, precise, and elegant.

Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 15 years old and the yield is around 35 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested partly by hand and partly mechanically, with a low yield to support ripeness and concentration.

Grape composition

This red wine from the Var is made entirely from Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir – IGP Var: Pinot Noir gives Valmoissine its refined structure, fresh red fruit expression, and elegant tannins. In this high-altitude part of Southern France, the grape achieves more sun ripeness than in Burgundy, but maintains a light, fresh tension due to the altitude.

Vinification and aging

The vinification aims for fruit, suppleness, and a pure expression of Pinot Noir.

Fermentation: The wine is traditionally fermented in open vats. This method helps extract color, aroma, and soft tannins from the skins, without making the elegant style of Pinot Noir too heavy.

Aging: The wine ages for 10–12 months in stainless steel tanks. This keeps the fruit bright and pure, with blackcurrant, raspberry, and a fresh finish without any oak influence.

Aging potential: This Pinot Noir has an aging potential of 3–5 years. This suits its fruity, rounded style, where freshness and suppleness are key.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2023 has a deep garnet red color, with aromas of blackcurrant and forest floor. The taste is full and round, with subtle notes of blackcurrant and raspberry. The tannins are beautifully balanced and the finish remains fresh and persistent.

Serving temperature: Serve this Pinot Noir at 14–15 °C, so that the black fruit, fresh tension, and soft tannins come together beautifully.

Dishes: Delicious with grilled red meat, poultry, cheeses, and dishes with red fruit, such as duck breast with a light berry sauce.

More information about Maison Louis Latour

Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and belongs to Burgundy's historic family houses. With Domaine de Valmoissine, Louis Latour demonstrates how Pinot Noir can also be elegant and refined outside Burgundy, provided the right altitude, soil, and exposure come together. The choice for this high-altitude estate in the Var aligns with the Burgundian precision of the house, but at the same time gives the wine a sunnier, more southern character.
