Moreover, this Eastern European country's impressive track record demonstrates that it's no novice to European winemaking. Winemaking dates back to the Middle Ages but flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries, when Moldova was still a kingdom. They remain a major wine producer within Europe, although the majority of their exports go to Moscow.

The vineyards of Salcuta

Salcuta was founded in 1995, at a time when Moldova was regaining independence and shaking off communism. It is located in one of Moldova's most breathtaking wine regions, Stefan Voda, in the northeast of the country. With the Black Sea at its doorstep, Salcuta's vineyards receive a generous amount of fresh air. Combined with the abundant sunshine, this ensures that the grapes develop almost perfectly. The result is a richly flavored Merlot Winemaker's Way, which is a superb wine in every respect.
