Bergerac

Wines from Bergerac

Near Bordeaux, we find the Bergerac wine region. A well-known region in southwestern France, it's a hilly area with beautiful steep slopes where the vineyards take full advantage of the climate. Its popularity began with the unique sweet wines from this region, but today, mainly dry wines are produced. However, those seeking classic sweet wines can still find them in this region.

The history of Bergerac

The region predates Bordeaux, as wine was already being produced here in the fifteenth century. The sweet wines, in particular, were world-renowned. The Bergerac wine region once enjoyed a favorable location near the Dordogne River, allowing merchants to easily transport their wine by river. It was then shipped to Bordeaux, where it could be further exported. The wines were already highly praised back then. Often made from Bordeaux grape varieties, they possessed a characteristic fruity style.

Grape varieties in Bergerac

The climate is similar to that of Bordeaux. It's temperate, with a strong influence from the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are mild here, with little rainfall, and summers are warm. The terroir is also virtually identical to that of Bordeaux, a mixture of gravel, clay, and limestone. Common grape varieties grown here include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Semillon, Muscadelle, and Sauvignon Blanc. These grapes thrive in the pleasant climate and produce ripe grapes.

The wine region has four distinct subregions where the rolling vineyards produce the finest Bergerac wines. First and foremost, Montravel and Haut-Montravel; crisp white wines are produced here. Delightfully fragrant with good structure. These are historic wines that have been produced for centuries. Take, for example, L'Abeille & La Fleur Wit, a beautiful blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The combination of these two grape varieties proved unique and yielded a magnificent result. The aroma translates into citrus notes, limegrass, passion fruit, and green apple. The taste is soft and refreshing, and very clean on the palate, with lovely hints of citrus fruit and green apple.

The sweet wines from Bergerac

Those who prefer sweet wines will find what they're looking for in Montbazillac and Saussignac. The grapes are harvested late here, just as noble rot has set in. These are deep yellow wines with a delicious flavor. A beautiful example is the Meolleux from La Pelissiere. A sultry temptation that we can't get enough of. The character of La Pelissiere Bergerac Moelleux is sweet but never cloying. You'll taste a pleasant juiciness of overripe pears and dried exotic fruit. Floral hints tickle your senses.
