Vineyards and climate of Saint-Émillion

The wine region covers 5,500 hectares, and grapes have been cultivated in this area since the 13th century. It therefore boasts one of the longest traditions of the entire Bordeaux wine region. In 1999, Saint-Émilion was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it the only wine region to be included. The vineyards are divided into two distinct areas: the Cotes (slopes) and the Graves (gravel-rich soils). Wines from the Cotes are characterized by a full flavor, while those from the Graves are slightly more refined and richer. Thanks to the unique microclimate, where warmth and coolness alternate, the grapes ripen exceptionally well. Furthermore, the diverse soil composition contributes to the quality of Saint-Émilion wines.

Saint-Émillion and its Grape Varieties

By far the most popular grape variety in Saint-Émillion is Merlot. This grape is widely planted by many winegrowers in the region. It is supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, and Malbec. Around 800 winegrowers work daily to produce quality wines made from these grapes. The focus is therefore on red wines.

Merlot is often added to a blended wine to make it more accessible. Our selection includes a wide range of blended wines. Take, for example, the Chapelle de la Trinite Saint Emilion. It's also known as the King of the Gironde because the Chapelle de la Trinite vineyards are in such beautiful condition. The vineyards are centuries old and provide the winemaker with a fantastic harvest. The vines are situated on the right bank of the Gironde River, which has a significant impact on the wine. The abundant sunshine allows the grapes to ripen perfectly, and the fresh river breeze provides them with sufficient coolness. The result is a beautiful, classic Saint Emilion with a contemporary, full-bodied, and powerful character.

Favorite wine from Saint-Émillion

But the Baron des Fontenilles St. Emilion Grand Cru is also well worth trying. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot complement each other sublimely. In the hilly landscape of Saint-Emilion, it's Merlot that thrives. Because of the less wind and humidity here, the Merlot has free rein to develop well and with refinement. This is also the case in the vineyards of Baron des Fontenilles. Along with Cabernet Franc, a Bordeaux classic, Merlot forms the foundation of Baron des Fontenilles St. Emilion Grand Cru. Perfectly blended by the talented winemaker, this is perhaps our favorite wine from Saint-Emilion.
