Portuguese winemaking is a fascinating field for our oenologists. Thanks to their experience, they know the viticulture of Italy, Spain, France, and even America, Australia, and Argentina intimately. Yet, Portugal still manages to surprise us. Forty years ago, Portugal was solely home to the highly successful Port. From the mid-1990s onward, a growing number of commercial wineries emerged. The Portuguese wines of Taboadella
Besides wine, Portugal is also the leading producer of cork. Amorim Group, among others, is a major player in international cork production. However, twenty years ago, they slowly but surely transitioned to wine. At the beginning of this century, they acquired the impressive Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. In 2018, they expanded their portfolio with the purchase of Taboadella in Dao. A positive move, as Taboadella wines have since become extremely popular in the wine world. In Taboadella's vineyards—a whopping 40 hectares—indigenous varieties play a significant role. Alfrocheiro also holds a prominent place, not entirely coincidentally the basis for this Taboadella 1255 Alfrocheiro Reserva. The Alfrocheiro grape is a special grape. Bursting with fruit yet possessing the necessary structure. The fruit is pure and doesn't impart an appassimento—or jammy—character to the wine. The fruit stands proudly at the base, but combined with fresh thyme, blooming violets, oak, and vanilla, it creates an impressive flavor. Raspberries, strawberries, cherries—you taste them all.
