The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Biscardo Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2022 unites classic Amarone with the iconic bottle that Luigi Biscardo specifically designed for this wine in 1968. Fifty years later, the original glass mold was used again, ensuring that every bottle carries a tangible piece of family history.

The grapes originate from the historic Classico area of Valpolicella, northwest of Verona.

  • Location / Origin: Valpolicella Classico forms the original heart of the appellation and includes Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, San Pietro in Cariano, and the valleys of Fumane, Marano, and Negrar.
  • Soil: The region features a variety of clay, sand, and stone soils, alongside water-retaining clay and stony limestone soils on the hills. This diverse soil mosaic supports both even ripening and the powerful structure of Amarone.

The concentrated style is achieved through careful selection, controlled drying, and slow processing of the fruit.

What is appassimento? In this traditional method, the grapes dry out gradually after harvest, concentrating aromas, sugars, and structure.

  • Harvest & Selection: Only healthy grapes are hand-picked early to ensure enough natural acidity for the final balance.
  • Appassimento: The clusters dry for 2–3 months in plastic crates, in ventilated rooms with controlled temperature and humidity. The loss of moisture gives the wine its characteristic concentration and full mouthfeel.
  • Fermentation: After drying, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, allowing the concentrated fruit to shine through purely.
  • Maturation / Wood aging: Subsequently, the wine develops further in wooden barrels. Wood aging rounds off the tannins and builds additional spice and depth.
  • Alcohol percentage: With 15.5% alcohol, this Amarone has enough power to carry its concentrated fruit, full structure, and long, warm finish.

The blend consists of 3 classic Valpolicella grapes; exact percentages are not disclosed.

  • Corvina – Valpolicella: Corvina brings cherry fruit and color, and due to its suitability for drying, it serves as a key foundation for the concentrated Amarone style.
  • Corvinone – Valpolicella: Corvinone adds fruit, deeper color, and structural tannins, forming a significant part of the wine's backbone.
  • Rondinella – Valpolicella: Rondinella adds floral nuances and an elegant aromatic lift to the blend.

More about Biscardo

The history of the Biscardo family began in 1878, when the company grew into one of the early wine trading houses of Verona. From the beginning of the 20th century, Terenzio Biscardo drove commercial development, after which the house reached restaurants in Italy and markets in Switzerland, England, and Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Under Luigi Biscardo, significant investments in vinification and bottling followed in the 1950s; that combination of family tradition, technical development, and recognizable identity still forms the foundation of Biscardo.
