The 2021 vintage in Rioja has received an excellent rating (94 points). The wines from this region are still youthful, tannic, and develop relatively slowly.
La Vendimia is the name of the young Rioja made by Palacios Remondo. It's remarkable that it's made with equal parts Garnache and Tempranillo. Alvaro Palacios is a firm believer in the Garnacha grape, even for Rioja. This La Vendimia Rioja is described as a "new style" super Rioja that, after vinification, was briefly aged in oak barrels. It's an exuberant wine with red and black fruit, delicate spiciness, earthy notes, and soft tannins.
Spain's most influential producer
One of Spain's most important and influential producers, Alvaro Palacios, makes stunning wines in Priorat and Bierzo. His family comes from Rioja, and he is one of nine children of the owner of Bodega Palacios Remondo. But instead of working with the family estate, he wanted to do things a little differently. After studying winemaking in Bordeaux and working for two years at Château Petrus in Pomerol, he chose the Priorat region, where he purchased his first vineyard, Finca Dofí, in 1990. He added the now-iconic L'Ermita vineyard in 1993. La Vendimia, meaning "the harvest," represents the quality potential of a Spanish jóven, wines aged in oak barrels for less than six months. Created by renowned Spanish winemaker Alvaro Palacios, La Vendimia is a blend of Spain's two original star varietals: Tempranillo and Garnacha. La Vendimia displays notes of ripe red and yellow cherries on both the nose and palate. Juicy orchard fruit blends seamlessly with silky undertones of soft minerality, culminating in a long, refreshing finish.
