Although South Africa is considered part of the New World, wine has been produced here for centuries. Even when the Dutch settled the Cape of Good Hope, winemaking was a daily occurrence. Many wineries still date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when South Africa was still a true trading post. This includes Avondale Winery, located in one of South Africa's oldest wine regions.
The Avondale wines from South Africa
When John and Ginny Grieve purchased the 160-hectare estate in 1997, wine had already been produced there for over 300 years. The area, just southeast of the town of Paarl, therefore boasts a truly impressive history. Avondale Winery is also in excellent company. With well-known neighbors like Nederburg, Spice Route, and Rupert & Rothschild, Avondale's location is practically perfect.
The Avondale Vineyards
The Avondale estate encompasses a whopping 160 hectares. With views of the majestic Paarl Mountains, the entire estate is truly magnificent. A stroll through the vineyards is breathtaking. The current winemaker has planted a diverse palette, with nothing standard. Think Grenache Noir, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Syrah, and Roussanne—all classics from France.
The finest wines from Avondale
Every Avondale wine is exceptionally well-structured. They are perfectly formed blends that truly shine. Just look at Avondale Cyclus, a white wine featuring all the beautiful white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Semillon, and Viognier. Perfectly blended for the ultimate tasting experience. Or a classic Cotes du Rhone Blend from Avondale Qvevri. In this South African red wine, Grenache Noir, Mourvedre, and Syrah blend perfectly, creating a near-perfect wine.
