The year 2023 was an excellent year for Northern Italian white wines, with scores up to 89 points. The wines are characterized as early-maturing, accessible, and of excellent quality.

We wouldn't turn down a good glass of Soave. When we were presented with San Lorenzo Soave Classico Vigne Vecchia, our expectations were sky-high. The winery behind this Soave is none other than Biscardo, a powerhouse when it comes to Veneto wines. And once again, they managed to leave our oenologists trembling. The century and a half of craftsmanship is evident in every Biscardo wine, and this San Lorenzo Soave Classico is no exception.

The wines of Biscardo

Biscardo is an authority on Italian wines. Its vineyards can be found throughout the country, including in Emilia-Romagna and Puglia. But the birthplace of Biscardo wines is found in the north, in the dazzling Veneto region. Here, the winery has vineyards in all of Veneto's leading wine regions, including Soave, where the local Garganega grape is king. The 12-hectare Soave vineyard is situated between the prestigious Château de Soave and Monteforte, renowned for its Amarone wines. Only the oldest Garganega vines are used in this Biscardo Borgo San Lorenzo Soave Classico Vigne Vecchia. Vigne Vecchia means that they are from old vines. And old vines yield a small, but top-quality, yield.

The vines grow in soil that is relatively peat-rich. This allows minerals to flourish in Biscardo Borgo San Lorenzo Soave Classico Vigne Vecchia. But when you dip your nose into the glass of wine, you're surprised by much more: citrus, ripe tropical fruit, and aromatic flowers. The richness of the aroma carries over into the taste: fresh lemon, ripe peach, and dried apricots. The fine minerals create a pleasant mouthfeel.
