For these magnificent—sadly underexposed—wines, we travel to Galicia. It's definitely worth skipping the Costas and exploring northwest Spain. The landscape feels more Irish than the Iberian Peninsula. Over the past fifty years, Galicia has increasingly established itself as essential for Spanish wine. The wines of Bodegas Chaves are largely to blame for this—thanks to them, Spanish wines from Galicia are more popular than ever.
The wines from Spain
Spanish winemaking has been around for centuries. After Italy and France, Spain holds a solid third place in the international wine industry. Not only in terms of quantity; the quality of Spanish wines is also exceptionally high. And that's not even mentioning all the beautiful wine regions the country boasts – there are now more than fifty. Galician wines are now among the most popular.
The wines of Bodegas Chaves
Bodegas Chaves is the oldest winery in the region. It is located in Galicia, in the Rías Baixas region. When Candido Chaves founded it in 1955, the region was completely unknown. It was Candido who discovered the potential of Albarino in the Rías Baixas region. It began modestly with a small vineyard in Fornos, but has since expanded considerably. In the 1980s, Candido took the initiative and encouraged seven other winemakers to designate the region a protected geographical area, thanks to the success of Albarino. Thus, in 1988, the DO Rías Baixas was established, and Bodegas Chaves was the first to register its wine with this DO.

Thirty-five years after being awarded the DO Rías Baixas, the Albarino grape remains crucial to Bodegas Chaves' wines. Chaves Cinco Islas Albarino is particularly popular, and Chaves Cinco Islas Oro Albarino is considered one of the finest Albarino wines from Spain. The winery also produces wines under the Silva Daponte label—excellent wines from other regions of Galicia, including Godello from Monterrei and Treixadura from Ribeiro.
