A Spanish delight—that's the best way to describe the wines of Bodegas Piqueras. This winery has a history spanning over a century and has truly left its mark on Spanish viticulture. Thanks in part to the efforts of Bodegas Piqueras, with their excellent Marius wines, Almansa, the region where the winery is located, received a classification. DO Almansa has existed since 1966, and the wines from this Spanish plateau are incredibly popular with connoisseurs.Bodegas Piqueras was founded in 1915 by Mario Bonete in the Almanse region, located in the interior of Valencia. For a long time, this area was considered unspectacular. Most grapes were grown for mass-produced wines, including those for Bodegas Piqueras. However, in 1961, the family decided to bottle their own wines and prioritize quality. A wise move, as Bodegas Piqueras wines quickly became a popular addition to many dinners and parties.
The vineyards of Bodegas Piqueras
DO Almansa is located in the inland region of Valencia, at altitudes of up to 1,000 meters. This gives the grapes an incredibly favorable location. On the one hand, the vineyards get incredibly hot during the day; the Spanish sun is working overtime. However, due to the high altitude and the relative proximity of the Mediterranean Sea, it can cool down considerably at night. This accelerates the growth process and ensures excellent grape quality.Bodegas Piqueras specializes primarily in red grape varieties. Think Spanish classics like Garnacha and Monastrell. The latter, in particular, is a true calling card for DO Almansa. Bodegas Piqueras also planted well-known names like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. These grapes are heat-tolerant and thrive in the Bodegas Piqueras vineyards.
