A remarkable winery, whose founder, Agoston Haraszty, was a remarkable man, to say the least. He came to California in the mid-19th century and founded Buena Vista Winery. For over 150 years, the winery has stood the test of time and is better than ever. It's striking that, in addition to excellent Chardonnays, it specializes in exquisite reds.

The founding of Buena Vista Winery

Buena Vista was founded in the mid-19th century by founder Agoston Haraszty. He had left his native Hungary to seek a bright future in America. At that time, gold seekers were flooding California. Agoston, too, was captivated by the gold rush. However, Agoston also brought with him from Hungary a deep love of wine. Ultimately, he didn't find gold, but rather a perfect terroir for vines in Napa Valley and Sonoma County.

Buena Vista wines from California

Buena Vista wines were created by their remarkable founder. They are distinctive wines that are not for everyday consumption. Wines to savor. A glass of wine you simply sit down and savor. Adventurous, robust, and exciting. Such was the life of Agoston Haraszty. He held many professions and trades: gold weigher, evangelist, sheriff, and adventurer. This last profession proved fatal when, in 1869, he fell into a crocodile-infested river in a Nicaraguan jungle.

The vineyards of Buena Vista

Despite the passing of this remarkable personality, the vineyards are still very much alive. The grape varieties planted are also remarkable. Besides the conventional California varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel, you'll also find lesser-known varieties, especially in Californian wines. For example, the Buena Vista winery has Pinot Noir North Coast, where the Burgundian Pinot Noir plays a leading role. Grenache Noir, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, and Petite Sirah are also cultivated with great care.

Buena Vista The Sheriff Red Blend

This is the winery's most striking wine: Buena Vista The Sheriff Red Blend. It's a tribute to founder Agoston Haraszty, who was elected Sheriff of San Diego County in 1850. A remarkable achievement considering he emigrated from Hungary just ten years earlier. The current owners of Buena Vista wines honor the founder with this successful wine, which combines no fewer than seven classic grape varieties to create a beautiful wine.
