Who doesn't love port? It's delicious as a finishing touch to a dinner with a cheese platter. Or just to warm up after a long winter day. Calem Port is robust, juicy, and intense; a port you'll want to keep sipping.
The port discovered by the English
Port was actually discovered by chance. It was the English who began importing wines from Portugal in the 17th century. Because of the distance, wine alcohol was added to the barrels of Portuguese wine. This halted the fermentation process and prevented the sugars from converting into alcohol. The result was an extremely sweet wine, which was particularly popular with the English. Many English entrepreneurs opened trading houses in Portugal to ship the port to the Netherlands. This is also the reason why many port houses have English names.
Calem Port from Portugal
Calem's port is a different story. Calem is Portuguese through and through. This port house was named after Antonio Alves Calem, a Portuguese native who founded his own port house near Porto in 1859. For no fewer than four generations, Calem was ruled by the Calem family. By keeping the expertise in-house, Calem port developed a truly distinctive signature. The port is slightly sweeter and fruitier than that of other houses. After four generations, Calem was acquired by Sogevinus. However, the quality of Calem has always remained consistent.
The Port of Calem
Calem's vineyards are located on several of its own Quintas. One of the most beautiful is perhaps Quinta do Arnozelo, where the vineyards are planted along the steep slopes of the Douro River. However, the epicenter of Calem's winemaking remains its own impressive cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto. Here, the Port wines often mature for several decades, sometimes even forty years!
