In 1898, the Italian Nicola Catena decided to emigrate to Argentina, specifically to Mendoza. In 1902, he decided to plant grapes, starting with Malbec. This marked the foundation stone for what would later become the magnificent Catena Zapata winery. Domingo Catena, Nicola's son, took over the company years later and grew it into one of the largest wineries in Mendoza. In 1965, Nicolas Catena took over. In early 1980, Nicolas moved to California to be a visiting professor at the Berkeley campus. During his time in California, he gained experience in Napa Valley and dreamed of emulating classic French wines. With this knowledge and his dream, he returned to Argentina. He sold part of his company, which primarily produced table wines, and wanted to retain only the portion that produced quality wines. For years, he searched for the best locations for his grapes so he could plant them here. In his view, these turned out to be the higher-lying areas. Initially, it was thought that this soil wouldn't be fertile enough. Nicolas disagreed, and he has since proven it. All this has resulted in the beautiful Catena Alta wines. In 2001, his daughter Laura took over the management. She also shared the same ambitions and introduced two new wines within Catena Zapata in 2004: the Nicasia and Adriana Vinyard wines. All in all, a wonderful history with sublime wines!
