The Challenges and Solutions of Chateau Cantelys

The terroir of Château Cantelys, vulnerable to frost, required significant investment to protect the vineyards. Situated near numerous trees, the team took rigorous steps by clearing a large portion of the surrounding forest and installing numerous wind turbines, which was crucial for providing greater ventilation to the vineyards. This proactive approach demonstrates Château Cantelys's dedication to preserving its terroir and producing wines of the highest quality, while maintaining a harmonious relationship with its environment.

Vineyards, Terroir and Vinification

Château Cantelys covers 40 hectares, 20 of which are planted with vines. The vineyard composition has undergone a significant shift, with a greater emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon for the red wines and an equal distribution of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for the whites. These carefully selected grape varieties benefit from the predominantly gravelly, clay-rich terroir, ideal for cultivating grapes that produce expressive and structured wines. The vinification, carried out by the same team responsible for Château Smith Haut Lafitte, emphasizes the quality and unique character of Château Cantelys, with both the red and white wines expressing the essence of their terroir.

Led by the Helfrich family, renowned for their extensive experience in the wine world and owners of several prestigious vineyards in France, including Château du Cartillon Haut Médoc and Château du Tertre in Margaux, Château Cantelys remains a jewel in Pessac-Léognan. With an annual production of approximately 6,000 cases of Château Cantelys Rouge and 2,000 cases of Château Cantelys Blanc, the château offers wines that delight both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers.
