Vintage Report

The 2021 vintage for Pessac-Léognan has been rated with a score of 89, indicating a year of inconsistent results. Quality is variable, with even the most prominent producers showing mixed results.
In June 1990, Patrick Jestin purchased the beautiful Château La Garde winery. He was incredibly proud because he believed in the wines of the Pessac-Léognan region. The unique terroir of the vineyards, the magnificent winery, and the ancient history make these wines from Château La Garde Pessac exceptional and among the world's best. Motivated by this ambitious project, worthy of this beautiful terroir, and a significant investment of time and effort, the wines have significantly improved in both their strength and suppleness. The coat of arms on Château La Garde's label is closely linked to the history of the Aquitaine region. It preserves the history of the Hundred Years' War in Aquitaine.

The old vineyard of Chateau La Garde

For years, grapes have been growing on the lands in Pessac-Léognan. For this red wine, only Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with a tiny bit of Petit Verdot, are used. These grapes thrive in a wonderful climate with both plenty of sunshine and plenty of room for refreshment. The ocean breeze plays a significant role in this, contributing to the even ripening of the bunches. Château La Garde has 52 hectares of vineyards that produce this red wine. All bunches are harvested by hand and transported to Château La Garde in small crates. Each vineyard is harvested separately, after which winemaker Frédéric Bonnaffous creates the blend for this red wine.

Wood storage for the Chateau La Garde Pessac Leognan

The juice is fermented in oak barrels, allowing this red wine to mature in oak from the very beginning. After fermentation, the black juice is aged in French oak barrels for a full fourteen months. Approximately 40% of the used barrels are unused, further enhancing its potency. This is evident when pouring this red wine, as it reveals a deep red color with a purple rim. Its aroma is rich and offers impressions of ripe fruit, a touch of sweetness and salt, and some smoky notes. On the palate, it's a true sensation, with plenty of power from black fruit and spices, as well as nuances of tobacco, cedar, vanilla, and plums. It's a wine with character and abundant ripe flavors. The finish is long and lingering, allowing you to savor it for a long time to come.
