Wines that seem to hail from Bordeaux. We're heading a little further east: Bergerac. Here, the third generation of Château des Fontenelles has been producing stunning wines since the turn of the century. Delicious wines for an aperitif or drinks. Definitely worth a visit.

The French wines from Bergerac

France is a wine country par excellence. Without French wines, other wine countries would never be able to develop as they do today. Thanks in part to Bordeaux, many grape varieties still enjoy impressive careers today. Château des Fontenelles is located near Bordeaux; we travel a little further east. Here we find Bergerac, a separate appellation since 1936. This small region below Bordeaux is affectionately called Bordeaux's little brother.

This isn't surprising, by the way; there are numerous similarities with France's finest wine region. The terroir and climate are comparable. Even the grapevines are practically identical. However, it's primarily the châteaux in Bergerac that have ensured the wines' increasingly superior reputation, including Château des Fontenelles. The only difference from Bordeaux is the price; the wines from Bergerac are much more affordable.

The vineyards of Chateau des Fontenelles

Nicolas Bourdil represents the third generation at Château des Fontenelles. However, the previous two generations were less involved with intensive viticulture than Nicolas. He wanted to produce the finest Bergerac wines and invested heavily in the château. He continued his studies and invested heavily in the wine cellar with the help of his parents. Since 2000, he has been producing the most exquisite Bergerac wines, which people have enjoyed year after year for over twenty years.

The grape selection is comparable to that of Bordeaux, including Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. A notable feature is the high proportion of Semillon. This gentle and sultry grape is primarily used in the Moelleux wines from Château des Fontenelles. Moelleux is a type of wine that is sweet and sultry, making it ideal as a dessert wine.

The Chateau des Fontenelles wines

Simple wines, yet top-quality. Okay, they don't offer the thrill of a robust Médoc or a crisp Saint-Émilion, but the price of the bottles is considerably lower. However, we do classify them as quality wines. Perfect with general dishes or as an aperitif. Simply good wines without too much fuss. That's what makes us happy.
